İske imlâ

İske imlâ (Tatar language for Old Orthography) is a variant of Arabic alphabet, used for Tatar language before 1920 and Old Tatar language.

The additional characters, what could not be found in Arabic and Persian was firstly invented in Chagatai language. The final alphabet was reformatted by Qayum Nasiri in the 1870s. In 1920 it was replased by Yanga imla (which was not Abjad, but with the same base).

Iske imla hadn't any letters or marks for Tatar short vowels such ı, e, o, ö. In Yanga imla they were added, but writing of concret words wasn't convented. That period Tatar language hadn't loaned vowels, so Arab loanwords was pronounced using Tatar vowels only (see table), European and Russian loanwords was prononced as they could be written in Iske imla. So, equator was spelled ikwatur.
