George Lucas and LucasArts
References to 1138 are scattered throughout George Lucas films and LucasArts computer games.
The earliest reference is in the title of his first movie, THX 1138. Other references include:
- Star Wars Episode I: in the scene where the battle droids are defunct, one of them has a symbol that looks like the numbers 1138 on its back.
- Star Wars Episode II: in the scene where Mace Windu says "Pilot, land in that assembly area!" and one of the clone troopers says "Yes, sir" back to him, the number 1138 is on the back of his neck, but it is too small to be seen on screen.
- Some have said that the sand marks made by Padme Amidala when she falls out of the Republic gunship look like the number 1138. While the two ones are clearly visible, the three and eight can be argued.
- Others have said that the droid piloting Count Dooku's ship away from the Jedi says "1138".
- Star Wars Episode III: CC-1138 is the numerical designation for Commander Bacara, commander of the Galactic Marines under General Ki-Adi-Mundi.
- Star Wars Episode IV: 1138 is the number of a cell block on the Death Star; the Imperial Stormtrooper suit Luke Skywalker stole in the Death Star belongs to TK-421, but was scripted and appears in the novelization as THX 1138.
- Star Wars Episode V: in an approximation of the 1138 meme, General Rieekan issues the following order: "Send Rogues 10 and 11 to Station 3-8".
- American Graffiti: the number-plate of Paul Le Mat's deuce coupe is THX 138.
- Maniac Mansion: the number-plate of the Cadillac is THX 1138
- Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders: the phone bill says Zak owes $1138.
- Outlaws: the train in the introduction has the number 1138 on its front.
- Star Wars: Republic Commando: the player's character has the serial number RC-1138.
- Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter: mission 03 assaults the "infamous Spacestation 1138".
- X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter: a pilot says "this is Corvette 1138".
- Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds: any stormtrooper eventually says "THX 1138 ready, sir" when selected.
- Escape From Monkey Island: when Guybrush meets with his future self in the Mists O' Tyme Marsh, he asks him "If you really are me, then what number am I thinking right now?" One of the answers his alter ego might give is "1-1-3-8". Later in the game, Guybrush meets a ghostly priest who has deified LeChuck, and also believes in "the Anti-LeChuck", a ten-foot tall demonized version of Guybrush with 1138 tattooed on his forehead.
Other games
- Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator: Grubb uses the code TXH 1138 to override his workbots.
- "Fallout 2": THX 1138 is clearly visible on the PIPBOY panel when on the world's map.
Music
- Horror punk band The Misfits (1977-1983) performed a song titled "We Are 138", the title and lyrics of which has become a topic of debate. The Misfits being known for basing songs on horror and science-fiction films, prevalent belief maintains that the song is a reference to George Lucas' 1971 THX 1138, reflecting the anonymity attached to living with a number for a name in a 25th century police state.
