• 1 May - The seat of the South African Republic government is officially transferred from Potchefstroom to Pretoria
• 4 May - The Orange Free State signs a peace treaty with Moshoeshoe I at Wittebergen, near Winburg, ending the first Basuto war

• 26 June - The Natal Railway Company opens the first railway line in South Africa, the 3,2km railway line ran along the Bluff side of the harbour to Durban
