- January 1 The Commonwealth Solar Observatory was established. Located on Mount Stromlo, outside Canberra, it enabled scientific research on the sun and geophysics.
- January 1 The Australian Automobile Association was formed. It lobbied for federal finance for roads and a national traffic code.
- January 30 The first Cabinet meeting was held in Canberra. The ministers were lodged at Yarralumla House, later the residence of the Governor-General.

- February 1 - The Australian Loan Council meets for the first time.

- April 12 HMAS Australia was scuttled off Sydney Heads. Some argue that the vessel was obsolete while others state that the scuttling was merely towards Britain's quota for the agreed arms limitation (see Washington_Naval_Treaty) following the end of World War I.

- September 4 The Commonwealth Citrus Research Station (subsumed in 1927 into the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO)) opened at Griffith, New South Wales in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (which is fed by the Murrumbidgee River).

- October 10 Commonwealth Electoral Act was enacted making voting in federal elections compulsory. (The next federal election was held on 14 November of the following year.)

- The first commercial rice crops were planted in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area in 1924 (harvested in 1925).
