Agostino Cardinal Casaroli

Agostino Cardinal Casaroli (November 24, 1914-June 9, 1998) was an Italian Catholic priest and diplomat for the Vatican City.
Casaroli was born in Castel San Giovanni (province of Piacenza, Italy) to a family of humble roots. He was ordinated priest in 1937. In 1961 he began to work at the Secretariat of State of the Vatican City under the orders of Pope John XXIII. In 1979 Pope John Paul II named him Cardinal Secretary of State.
In 1985 he became Cardinal Bishop of the suburbicarian diocese of Porto-Santa-Rufina, and in 1990 he retired as Secretary of State, being succeeded by Angelo Cardinal Sodano. He was Vice-Dean of the College of Cardinals from 1993 until his 1998 death of cardiorespiratory disease.
