The anime
Perhaps the most likely interpretation would be "Loving Sisters". Along with the nature of the series' content, this suggests that the assigned english title, Immoral Sisters, is actually rather inappropriate. Also, the subtitles are rather crude. This article primarily concerns the original version, with japanese speech.
The story revolves around a mother, Yukie Kitazawa, and her two adopted daughters Rumi and Tomoko. Yukie has a car accident while her husband is away on a business trip, and is forced to repay the other party, a young man named Taketo Nogawa, by sexual means. Taketo and his father, a powerful and corrupt business owner, blackmail and violate Yukie and Rumi.
But Yukie's husband has been impotent for some time (due to his suppressed sexual attraction to Tomoko), and she cannot help but welcome the sexual attention Taketo shows her. Though he is an impulsive, frustrated young man prone to occasional outbursts, we are given the impression that Taketo is not a bad person on the inside; after all, he's had to grow up with a father he fears and detests as his strongest male influence.
Yumi, who works at Taketo's father's company, also joins in the emotional maelstrom; at times, she appears to be a loyal servant of the company and its interests, such as collecting the money owed by Yukie. At other times, she seems more concerned with the solidarity of the family that has recently come to include Taketo.
In the middle of it all stands Tomoko, the younger sister, a girl so innocent that she loves everyone. Allowing Taketo's father to rape her just so her mother and sister won't have to suffer alone, Tomoko remains true to herself, even as she discovers the pleasures of sex. Gently seducing her sister, giving up the opportunity to have sex with Taketo for her mother's sake, and even offering herself to her newly-returned stepfather to satisfy his secret desire, curing his impotence, Tomoko does all in her power to keep the family happy and together despite their lack of genetic bonds.
This would suggest that perhaps sexuality and innocence are not mutually exclusive attributes, after all.
Notably, Ai Shimai does not strictly adhere to chronological order; indeed, it could be that the second and third parts depict separate, alternate endings. Also, some scenes are viewed through the eyes of different characters, a narrative technique that allows the advancing story to switch back and fill in where it previously left off.
The atmosphere of the series is often softer and more relaxed than in typical hentai; this in turn leaves room for less direct sensual actions between the characters, which creates a rare kind of mood where the love, tenderness and gradually building excitement are almost tangible.
Containing both heterosexual and lesbian love-making (sometimes in the same scene), with an emphasis on story, characters and relationships unheard-of in western pornography, and making good use of several time-honored traditions of romantic fantasy, perhaps most notably genuine affection and cuteness, Ai Shimai is a series well suited to hentai fans who are sick of cruel fates, unhappy endings, loveless sex and, of course, giant demon beasts with penis tentacles.
The episode ending sequences depict Rumi and Tomoko hugging or holding hands, wrapped up in ribbons, together. Coupled with the rather emotional closing theme, this strong, moving imagery has been known to make at least one person cry.
