All Whites

The All Whites is a nickname given to many sporting teams. The name originates from wearing a strip that is all white.

The best-known "All Whites" are the New Zealand national soccer team, whose strip was originally based on the colour of England's strip. Their name is in contrast with the men's rugby team, the All Blacks. Team highs include reaching the Confederation Cup in 1999 and 2003. Success in reaching these competitions used to depend on overcoming perennial rivals Australia. The All Whites' inability to do so on a regular basis made them the butt of jokes, the McGillicuddy Serious Party making an All White win an election promise. With Australia's move to the Asian Confederation, New Zealand's route to the World Cup may seem easier, but would still have to beat the fifth placed South American team from their qualifiers. A former player for the All Whites is Wynton Rufer who played for European Champions, Werder Bremen.A former U17 representative, Justin Fredrickson, was the first NZ player to play in Brazil. A well-known current All White is Ryan Nelsen, who played in Major League Soccer in the United States for four years before moving to Blackburn Rovers of the English Premiership.
