Ampulla refers to a dilated segment in a tubular structure. The ampulla is also referred to as a papilla.

Ampullae are also bulb-like structures above the tube feet in echinoderms.

The Ampulla of Vater is a small muscle, part of the duodenum where the common bile duct empties into the second part of the duodenum, so named because it has the appearance of an ampulla. It is named after Abraham Vater (1684-1751), a German anatomist who first published a description of it in 1720.
