Andrew Smith (zoologist)

Dr. Sir Andrew Smith (December 3, 1797 - August 12, 1872) was a Scottish surgeon and zoologist.

Smith was born in Hawick. He began his professional life as a ship's surgeon. He was stationed at the Cape Colony from 1820 to 1837, during which time he led a scientific expedition into the interior. He wrote Illustrations of the Zoology of South Africa (1838-50).

Smith returned to Britain in 1837. During the Crimean War he was Director-General of the British Medical Services, retiring in 1858.
