Present day 809

The area codes (809) along with (829) (as an overlay), are today the local telephone area codes solely for the Dominican Republic

Following Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in the year 1999, no other countries still pass-thru old numbers from the legacy 809 area code.

When in the Dominican Republic, the full area code + seven digit phone number must be dialed. When calling to the Dominican Republic from anywhere in the United States or Canada dial, 1(809) + seven digit phone number.

Historical 809

The area code (809) which was first deployed in 1958, was until the mid-1990s covering much of the British West Indies in the Caribbean Basin plus Bermuda, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. With the advent of fax machines, mobile phones, computers, and pagers and their growth in the region, the entire 809 block of seven-digit numbers was almost entirely allocated. The answer became to add more area codes for each and every one of the territories in the West Indies and Bermuda. Thereby no longer having multiple nation-states grouped solely within the (809) area code. The only island to still utilize the legacy 809 area code today is the Dominican Republic. The divested parts of the former (809) area code now have their own new area codes. Those places now include:
