Arkhangelsk Oblast

Arkhangelsk Oblast (Арха́нгельская о́бласть) is a regional subdivision of Russia. It includes Franz Josef Land and Novaya Zemlya island, and also the autonomous district of Nenetsia.
Excluding Nenetsia, Arkhangelsk Oblast has an area of 587,400 km² and a population of 1336539 (2002 All-Russian Population Census).
Arkhangelsk is the administrative center of the region, with a population of around 350,000. Historically, the chief centers were Kholmogory, Kargopol, and Solvychegodsk. One can find medieval wooden chapels and the Antoniev Siysky Monastery lost in impassable woods. The Solovetsky Islands in the White Sea are a World Heritage Site. Severodvinsk is a primary shipyard for the Russian Navy. Plesetsk Cosmodrome is the only spaceport within the Russian borders.
