Originally born as outlets for surplus military equipment, army surplus stores have, in more recent years, transformed into more generic outdoor supply stores. However, the bulk of merchandise available at a typical army surplus continues to be military-styled or military-themed, with many items actually having been used by the military in some capacity. Merchandise typically includes camoflage and other military-type clothing, backpacks and duffels of various sizes and styles, boots, camping supplies, knives and tools, and often (presumably non-surplus) MREs or Meals-Ready-to-Eat. Stores may also carry miscellaneous items such as camouflage netting, flak jackets, mortar shell cases, and cartridge boxes. In reality, virtually anything used by the military may wind up in a surplus store, so the real fun of going is scrounging for interesting oddities in the racks.
