Awn Shawkat Al-Khasawneh

Judge Awn Shawkat Al-Khasawneh has been a member of the International Court of Justice since February 6, 2000.
Al-Khasawneh was born in Amman, Jordan on February 22, 1950. He received his university education at Queens' College, Cambridge in England, where he attained an undergraduate degree in history and law, and a master’s degree in international law.
After joining the Jordanian diplomatic service in 1975, Al-Khasawneh was appointed as Jordan’s Second Secretary, then First Secretary to the United Nations in New York City (1976-1980). From 1980 until 1990, he held senior legal posts in the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1991 until 1994, he was Legal Adviser to the Jordanian delegation to the peace negotiations between Israel and Jordan. In 1995, Al-Khasawneh became Adviser to the King of Jordan and Adviser of the State on International Law with the rank of Cabinet Minister. He was appointed Chief of the Royal Hashemite Court from 1996 to 1998. Al-Khasawneh has also been a member of numerous international law bodies during his career.
