Bad Reichenhall is a spa town, and administrative center of the Berchtesgadener Land district in Upper Bavaria, Germany. It is located near Salzburg in a basin encircled by the Chiemgauer Alps (including Mount Staufen (1771 m) and Mount Zwiesel (1781m)).
Bad Reichenhall is a traditional center of salt production, obtained by evaporating water saturated with salt from brine ponds.
History
- The earliest known inhabitants are tribes of the Glockenbecher-Culture (a Bronze Age Cultue, about 2000 B.C.)
- In the age of the Latene-Culture (about 450 B.C.) an well organized salt production is established, a celtic place of worship is placed at the "Langacker"
- 15 B.C - 480 city in the roman province Noricum
- 1136: founding of monastery St. Zeno
- In 1617-1619 a wooden (brine) pipeline to Traunstein is build (length 31 km, more than 200m altitude difference).
- 2/3 of the buildings are destroyed by the major fire of 1834
- early 19th century: beginning tourism, Reichenhall becomes a famous health resort
- 1890 Reichenhall is now called "Bad Reichenhall"
- 1945 bombing of allied forces, following World War II it was for a period under American military government (1945-1948)
