Banaba Island

From Freepedia

Banaba Island (also Ocean Island), an island in the Pacific Ocean, lies west of the Gilbert Island chain and east of Nauru. It forms part of the Republic of Kiribati.

Phosphate-mining (for fertiliser) from 1900 to 1979 stripped away a large portion of the island's surface. The British authorities relocated most of the population to Rabi Island, Fiji in 1947, but some have returned since the end of mining. The highest point on the island is also the highest point in Kiribati at 81 meters (266 feet) high.
