A bomb threat is a form of terrorism -- a threat to detonate an explosive, typically by phone. Roughly 98% of all bomb threats turn out to be pranks. The authorities decide whether or not to evacuate depending on the perceived seriousness of the threat.

Building evacuations due to a bomb threat are typically accomplished by word of mouth, rather than sirens or other signals.

Course of Action

In the case of a bomb threat, a supervisor should be notified. If possible, this should be done by another person while the caller is kept busy on the line.

This information should be collected from the caller, if possible:

  • The exact location of the explosive
  • Time of detonation
  • The bomb's appearance
  • The caller's motivation and identity
