The Hammer Brother is one of the few still-popular Mario characters that first appeared in Super Mario Bros.. They often appear in pairs (hence the name "brothers"). Sometimes, however, they appear separately, but there are always two brothers in one level.
They usually are found on platforms and jump up and down and move back and forth. They are notorious for being one of the hardest enemies to defeat, because they move around so quickly and constantly throw a large barrage of hammers all over the place. Bowser moves much slower and the later Bowsers only send 1-2 barrages of hammers.
Super Mario Bros. 3
In Super Mario Bros. 3, several variants of the Hammer Bros. were introduced:
- Boomerang Bros. looked similar, but appeared on the ground and threw boomerangs one at a time instead of hammers. This is the only variation that appears alone.
- Sledge Bros. were super-sized versions of the Hammer Bros. with green skin, bigger hammers (sledges), and (due to their tremendous size) could make the ground shake by jumping up and down.
- Fire Bros. (extremely rare) spit fireballs instead of hammers, much like those from Fire Mario.
Hammer Brothers also appeared on the world map as patrolling police-like figures. When Mario ran into one of them, a battle would begin. After defeating the Hammer Brother, Mario would get a treasure chest that gave him an item. They were in several variations: Image:CartoonSledgeBros.jpg
- Hammer Bros. - There were two Hammer Brothers on two ledges and would throw, a tribute to their trademark arrangement in Super Mario Bros.. Although most battles were on dry ground, in some worlds, the ground would be submerged in water.
- Boomerang Bros. - There would be one, and would throw 1-2 boomerangs.
- Sledge Bros. - They would appear alone, throw a hammer, and attempt to stun Mario by stomping on the ground.
Super Mario World
In Super Mario World, there was no mention of the Hammer Bros. or their variants from Super Mario Bros. 3. However, the game did feature two new variants:
- Amazing Flying Hammer Brother flew on a platform and rapidly threw hammers down on Mario, but could be easily knocked off (by bumping it from beneath) or from the top (unadvisable due to the hammer-throwing). The platform would still fly and Mario could jump on it afterwards to reach high areas unreachable by jumping.
- Sumo Brothers were much rarer; these mostly resided on the top of blocks. When Mario was close to them, one would stomp up and down, sending flaming shockwaves 4-5 spaces below. These could only be taken out by jumping underneath them, using a star, or throwing a Koopa shell.
Super Mario RPG
The Hammer Brothers were the first boss in the game. Their special attacks included Hammer Time (an offensive attack) and Valor up (which increases it's attack power). Mario received the hammer after he defeated the Hammer Bros. At Bowser's Castle, you meet a quiz-loving Hammer Bro. named Dr. Topper, who is basically a palette swap of the normal Hammer Bro.
Mario Superstar Baseball
In this game, the Hammer Brothers are playabale, but they must be unlocked. To unlock them play in Challenge Mode as Bowser, and you should earn him.
Super Mario Strikers
In Super Mario Strikers the Hammer Brothers are playable with other characters like Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, Yoshi, Toad and Donkey Kong.
