| Dispholidus typus (A. Smith, 1829) |
A Boomslang (Dispholidus typus) is a large, venomous snake native to Sub-Saharan Africa. Its name means "tree snake" in Afrikaans. Its venom is hemotoxic.
Boomslangs are greenish to brown or black in color and grow to about 1.5 m (about 5 ft) long. They are oviparous. Most members of the family to which the boomslang belongs are harmless, but the boomslang has a potent venom that it delivers through large, deeply grooved fangs that are located at the rear of the mouth. The bite of the boomslang can be fatal. Boomslangs, as their name suggests, are often found in trees. Scientific classification: The boomslang belongs to the family Colubridae.
Boomslang in fictional works
Shredded skin of Boomslang is one of the ingredients to make the Polyjuice Potion in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
