Cairns International Airport

Image:Cairns Airport.JPG Cairns International Airport (CNS) is an Australian domestic and international airport in Cairns, Queensland, Australia. It is operated by the Cairns Port Authority. The airport is located 7km north of the Cairns CBD in the suburb of Aeroglen. The airport lies between Mount Whitfield on the west and Trinity Bay on the east. It is situated on reclaimed land - the airport site was originally a mangrove swamp.

The airport serves international, domestic and general aviation flights including a number of helicopter opperators located at the airport. Flights are opperated to major Australian cities and tourist destinations, regional communities in north Queensland and a number of international destinations in the Asia Pacific region with connections to the rest of the world. The airport is also a base for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the Queensland Emergency Service search and rescue helicopters.

The General Aviation area is on the western side of the airport adjacent to the Captain Cook Highway The Domestic and International terminals are located on the eastern side on reclaimed mangrove swamp. The terminals are in two separate buildings two hunder metres away from one another. The air traffic control tower is also located in this area.

The airport’s main north-south runway is 3200m long. A smaller 925m runway lies to the east and runs almost parallel to the main runway. It is used for general aviation. The final approach to the main south facing runway is located directly overhead Cairns' northern beach suburbs. The flight path to the south is located directly over the Cairns Esplanade. Departing aircraft are required to make a sharp left hand turn so as not to fly up the valley to the south of the city.

Total passangers movements for the year ending 30 June 2005 were 2,726,524[1] (2,619322 domestic and 107,202 international).
