California State Route 19 (also known as Lakewood Boulevard and Rosemead Boulevard) is a major thoroughfare running roughly north-south in the greater Los Angeles area. Its southern terminus is at a traffic circle in southeastern Long Beach and its northern terminus is in Sierra Madre at Sierra Madre Villa Avenue, where it turns into east-west Orange Grove Boulevard (of Rose Parade fame). (SR 19 ends at I-210, the Foothill Freeway, about a mile south of Sierra Madre Villa Avenue.) Originally planned as a freeway, it was to be the intermediate north-south freeway between I-710 (the Long Beach Freeway) and I-605 (the San Gabriel River Freeway).
Today, locals generally refer to this road as either Lakewood Boulevard or Rosemead Boulevard, not by its numerical designation. It is named Lakewood Boulevard between Long Beach and the Downey/Pico Rivera boundary at Telegraph Road (just north of Interstate 5, the Santa Ana Freeway) and Rosemead Boulevard from there to Sierra Madre.
Current status
From north to south, areas of interest include:
- The unusually complex interchange with I-210, the Foothill Freeway
- The interchange with I-10, the San Bernardino Freeway
- The interchange with California State Route 60, the Pomona Freeway
- The Whittier Narrows Dam, Whittier Narrows flood control basin and Whittier Narrows Recreation Area, built to expressway standards
- The area around the Long Beach Municipal Airport, which is similar to Sepulveda Boulevard near LAX
- The interchange with I-405, the San Diego Freeway
The oldest operating McDonald's restaurant, complete with original architecture and sign, is located on the southeast corner of Lakewood Boulevard (CA-19) and Florence Avenue in the city of Downey.
Legal definition
319. (a) Route 19 is from Del Amo Boulevard near Long Beach to Gardendale Street/Foster Road in the Cities of Bellflower and Downey, and then, with an interruption of already relinquished route, from Telegraph Road at the Downey City limit to Route 164 (Galatin Road) at the northerly city limit of Pico Rivera. (b) If the commission determines it is in the state's best interests to do so, it may do the following, pursuant to a cooperative agreement between the city and the department: (1) Relinquish to the City of Bellflower the portion of Route 19 between the city's southerly city limit near Rose Avenue and Gardendale Street/Foster Road. (2) Relinquish to the City of Downey the portion of Route 19 between the city's southerly city limit at Century Boulevard and Gardendale Street. (3) Relinquish to the City of Pico Rivera the portion of Route 19 between Telegraph Road and Gallatin Road. (c) A relinquishment under this section shall become effective when the county recorder records the relinquishment resolution containing the commissioner's approval of the relinquishment's terms and conditions. (d) Any portion of Route 19 relinquished pursuant to this section shall cease to be a state highway on the effective date of the relinquishment.
