Canada, New France

From Freepedia

Canada, was the name of the French colony along the St. Lawrence River basin, and the northern coastal area of the Great Lakes. It was part of French North America, of the New France colonies. Because the capital of Canada (Québec City) was also the capital of New France, the terms Canada and New France were often used interchangeably. This was the exception, as all the other colonies of New France (Acadia, Louisiana, Newfoundland) and even cities (Trois-Rivières, Montréal) had their governors.

After the Treaty of Paris when France ceded Canada to the United Kingdom in exchange for keeping Guadaloupe, the colony was renamed as the Province of Quebec.
