Capital Regional District, British Columbia
From Freepedia
The Capital Regional District is one of many regional districts in British Columbia and has a population of about 350,000. It encompasses the Southern end of Vancouver Island including Greater Victoria, the west of the Island to Port Renfrew, and includes all the southern Gulf Islands (Saltspring, Galiano, Pender, Saturna, and Mayne). The seat is Victoria.
The CRD runs the local water supply for Greater Victoria, located in Sooke. They also run a number of regional parks. The CRD can also pass bylaws that are binding in its member municipalities. These include a controversial smoking ban in all public places several years ago.
The CRD maintains two regional trails - the Galloping Goose and Lochside trails - which are popular for cycling, running, walking and (in some parts) horseback riding. With their long flat paths, these trails are also ideal for commuting in the Greater Victoria area.
