Carrickmacross

Carrickmacross (Carraig Mhachaire Rois in Irish), locally known as Carrick, is a town in County Monaghan, Ireland. Its population in the 2002 Census was 3,800. It is the home of Carrickmacross lace. The poet, Patrick Kavanagh was born in the neighbouring village of Inniskeen.
The town is situated between Ardee and Castleblaney, with the N2 road which links the towns bypassing Carrickmacross. The bypass, part of the N2 upgrade, was opened on January 21, 2005 by Transport Minister Martin Cullen. The bypass is the only road in Ireland that is named after a person after being unveiled as 'The Kavanagh Way' in honour of the poet. The town is connected to Dundalk, approx 35 km to the east, by the R178.
