Casper: A Spirited Beginning is a direct-to-video spin-off to the 1995 film Casper. It was released by Universal Studios Home Video in 1997.

As the title implies, the film shows how Casper became a ghost. It seems the movie is supposed to be a prequel, but it's so blatantly unconsistant with the previous film one might be tempted to think the two films are not even set in the same world. These inconsistencies include:

In the first film, it's stated Casper died some time either in the late 19th century or early 20th century, but this film features him becoming a ghost and is set in modern times
The house Casper haunted in the first film was his father's house, but here he joins the Ghostly Trio, which are already haunting a house (not the same as the one from the first movie)
According to this film, ghosts have to go through training before becoming ghosts, but in the previous film, two characters died and came back as ghosts instantly
Casper appears lonely at the beginning of the first film, despite the fact he forges a friendship with a young boy in this movie (which, presumably, is a prequel)
