The Golden Shower Tree (Cassia fistula) Dok Khuen in Thailand, is a dicotyledoneus plant also known in several Spanish speaking countries as caƱa fistula. The pod-like fruit of this tree has a pungent odor, and is well known for its medicinal use. The seeds are poisonous. Seeds have been widely distributed through all the world, used in several places as an ornamental plant.
Cultivation
Not recommended for dry climates. USDA Hardiness zones 10B and 11. Pinnately compound leaves with leaflets up to 8 inches long and 2-1/2 inches wide. Leaf drop is quickly replaced. The tree's spread is 25 to 35 feet and it reaches a height of 25 to 50 feet. Not suitable for clipping. Fast growth. Life span is 25 to 50 years. Very showy.
Grow in full sun on well-drained soil. Drought and salt tolerant. Will be damaged by short bouts of freezing weather, but should recover in the spring. Needs occasional pruning to control shape. No major pests, but subject to mildew, leaf spot and root diseases.
