Clyde Auditorium

From Freepedia

The Clyde Auditorium, commonly known as The Armadillo, located on the north bank of the River Clyde in Glasgow, is part of the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, Scotland's national venue for public events.

The regeneration of the Clyde corridor, which involved the reclamation of a large amount of land from docks used in the defunct Clyde shipbuilding industry, started in 1983 with the construction of the main building of SECC on the site of Queen's Dock in 1985.

In 1995 construction began on a new building — the Clyde Auditorium — to become part of the SECC complex. Designed by award-winning architect Sir Norman Foster and often called "the Armadillo" by Glaswegians, this new 3,000 seater building was completed in 1997.

The 'Armadillo' has become an iconic structure on the Clyde, and is Glasgow's equivalent of the Sydney Opera House. The SECC are planning a major redevelopment of the Queens Dock site, including a new 12,000 seater Arena, casino and luxury hotel.
