Columbia-Shuswap Regional District, British Columbia

The Columbia-Shuswap Regional District is located in the heart of the southern interior region of British Columbia, on the Trans-Canada Highway between Vancouver and Calgary. The regional district is situated on the northern end of the Kootenay and Okanagan Valleys. It has some of the best views in all of Canada. It is a vacation destination, playing host to all seasons. The population of the region is 52 227 (2004 Stats). The district seat is in Salmon Arm.

Geography

Alpine mountains and glaciers and the magnificent Rocky Mountains dominate the vistas in the eastern half of the regional district. The internationally renowned Shuswap Lake system is the dominating feature in the western half. Shuswap Lake, an H-shaped lake, is popular for house boating. It also has sandy beaches that run along almost all of its shore line. The rivers that empty into it include the Salmon River, Shuswap River, and the Eagle River. The surrounding mountains are also popular for snowmobiling, and skiing.
