Proto-Romanian (also known as Common Romanian) is a hypothetical language considered to have been spoken by the ancestors of today's Romanians and related Balkan Latin peoples (Vlachs) after the breakdown of the Roman Empire and before it was broken into the following modern Eastern Romance languages and their dialects:

The place where this language was formed is still under debate; most likely it was formed in Dacia (current Romania), Moesia (Eastern Serbia) or Northeastern Albania. See: Origin of Romanians
