Competition law is law which seeks to promote competition and prohibit unfair trade practices in the marketplace, and generally encompasses antitrust and consumer protection laws.

Antitrust

Antitrust laws seeks to combat monopolies and other economic distortions in the marketplace. For example, such laws will generally prohibit unfair business practices.

Consumer protection

Consumer protection laws seek to regulate certain aspects of the commercial relationship between consumers and business, such as by requiring minimum standards of product quality, requiring the disclosure of certain details about a product or service (eg. with regard to cost, or implied warranties), or prescribing financial compensation for product liability.
