Đà Nẵng is a region and city in central Vietnam near the ancient capital of Huế. The Chữ Nôm characters for the city are "岘港".
History
In August 1858, French troops landed, under the orders of Napoleon III, beginning colonial occupation in the area. As a concession it was named Tourane in French. It came to be considered one of Indochina's five major cities.
In December 1996, the region was formally designated Đà Nẵng province. The government of Đà Nẵng city was inaugurated officially on January 1, 1997.
Transportation
Noi Bai International Airport located at the center of the city is the third international airport of Vietnam besides Tan Son Nhat International Airport (Ho Chi Minh City) and Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi). Before 1975, it is one of the busiest airports in the world.
Currently, the domestic flights to Danang are served by national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines and Pacific Airlines. Vietnam Airlines has flights from Danang to Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Nha Trang, Pleiku (Gia Lai) and Buon Ma Thuot (Dak Lak). Pacific Airlines is operating Ho Chi Minh City - Danang route. They are going to open Hanoi - Danang route on 4th November, 2005.
Danang has limited international routes and most of them are suffering loss due to low demand. At the moment, Danang is connected with Singapore by SilkAir, Bangkok by PB Air and Tai Pei by FAT Air. The low-cost carrier Tiger Airways is expecting to open Singapore - Danang route before the end of 2005.
