Da'an District (Chinese: 大安區, Wade Giles: Ta-an, Tongyong Pinyin: Da-an, Taiwanese: Tōa-an-khu) is an important religious, educational, commercial, and cultural district of Taipei City. The name of the district means "great safety" or "great peace." It should be noted that the name "Daan" is pronounced as two syllables rather than one ("Da-an").
Places of worship in Daan include the Mormon Temple, the Taipei Mosque, the Epicospal Church, and the Holy Family (Catholic Church). The Holy See maintains a representative office in this district.
The district boasts three national universities: the National Taiwan University, the National Taipei University of Technology, and the National Taiwan Normal University. The former two universities have strong engineering programs. Besides the nation's best universities, Chiengkuo Secondary School, one of Taipei's best secondary schools, is also located in Daan.
Daan has numerous shopping places. Specialty markets include the Jianguo (Chien-kuo) Weekend Flower Market, the Jianguo Weekend Jade Market, and the Kuanghua (Computer and Electronics) Bazaar. On Zhongxiao (Chung-hsiao) East Road and neighboring alleys, there are numerous clothing shops, restaurants serving world cusines, and major department stores including the Sogo Department Store.
Other attractions include the Daan Forest Park, which was built on land formerly occupied by military officers and their families, and the Taipei Municipal Library.
