Immigration & Emigration

There are currently more people immigrating into the European Union than there are emigrating. Immigration is a controversial issue in some member states such as the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

In Portugal, the issue is more peaceful, but also with some problems. Portugal started receiving massive amounts of immigrants towards the end of the 20th century, due to Germany opening Europe's borders to Eastern Europeans, mainly Ukrainians. Nevertheless, the population still remembers that many Portuguese also emigrated to other countries until very recently, and some still do today (often within the EU). It is much more common for the Portuguese population to informally gather to help an immigrant than to discriminate against them. One in ten people in Portugal is an immigrant, most of them Angolans, Brazilians, Cape Verdeans, Moldavans, Romanians, Russians and Ukrainians.

This figure is for immigration and emigration into the European Union, and therefore excludes any internal movements between member states.

  • 1.5 migrants/1 000 population (July 2004 estimate)
