Dongxiang

The Dongxiang people (own name: Sarta or Santa; Simplified Chinese: 东乡族 Traditional Chinese︰東鄉族; Pinyin: Dōngxiāngzú) are an ethnic group closely related to the Mongolians, who practice Islam. They form one of the 56 ethnic groups officially recognized by the People's Republic of China.
Most of the Dongxiang live in the Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture (simplified Chinese: 临夏回族自治区; traditional Chinese: 臨夏回族自治區; Pinyin: Línxià Huízú Zìzhìqū), and surrounding areas, of Gansu Province in northwestern China. Their language, also referred to as Dongxiang, is one of the Mongolian Altaic languages. According to the 2000 census, their populaion numbers 513,805.
