Drosophilidae (Order: Diptera) is a diverse, cosmopolitan family of flies, including the genus Drosophila, which includes the species fruit fly, vinegar flies, wine flies, pomace flies, grape flies, and picked fruit-flies.
These flies may have several shades of color, including white eyes and black skin. Due to the short lifespan and ease of upkeep they are ideal for testing genetic theories.
Removal of fruit flies
- Fruit flies breed rapidly: all they require is a constant source of food (any organic material). They are especially attracted to rotting fruits such as bananas, grapes, and melons. It is important to clean all surfaces thoroughly and remove any decaying produce.
- Fruit flies can also breed in drains, as they are a source of organic material and humidity. To remove fruit flies from drains, pour boiling water and cleaning solution down the pipes. To prevent re-infestation, cover drains tightly with saran wrap at night.
- Commercial pesticides and fruit fly traps are also available.
