Duke is an English word that derives, via the french duc, from the Latin dux 'leader' (from the verb ducere, 'to pull, to lead').

  • It is used to render the various uses of the Latin word dux, such as Late Roman & Byzantine military & provincial title dux (ranking below Comes), see that article.
  • Mainly though, it is a title of nobility for aristocrats of very high rank, including the highest Britsh peers (not counting Princes of the blood, who as such outrank all peers) : see the article Duke
