East Ayrshire (Siorrachd Inbhir Àir an Ear in Gaelic) is one of 32 unitary council regions in Scotland. It borders onto North Ayrshire, Renfrewshire, South Lanarkshire, South Ayrshire and Dumfries and Galloway. With South Ayrshire and the mainland areas of North Ayrshire, it forms the traditional county of Ayrshire. There is some suggestion at present that the three Ayrshire authorities may merge to recreate a single county-wide authority.
