T. W. Edgeworth David

Sir Tannant William Edgeworth David (January 28 1858 - August 28 1934) was an Australian geologist and explorer. He was born in St. Fagans, Wales and died in Sydney, Australia. T. W. Edgeworth David migrated to Australia 1882 to work as an assistant geological surveyor, until he became a professor of geology at Sydney University in 1891. He continued at the University until 1924.
Accomplishments
Edgeworth David is best known for his work on the Second British Antarctic expedition lead by Ernest Shackleton in 1907. During this expedition, he led the first successful ascent of Mount Erebus, Antarctica’s only active volcano, and led the first team to reach the Magnetic South Pole.
Honors and Tributes
Edgeworth David was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1900. He was knighted in 1920, receiving the Order of the British Empire Knight Commander. The Edgeworth David Medal awarded by the Royal Society of New South Wales]], which is awarded for distinguished contributions by a young scientists under the age of thirty-five (35) years for work done mainly in Australia or its territories, is named in his honor.
