Edward, Duke of Guimarães

Edward of Portugal (Portuguese language: Duarte]]) - (Lisbon, October 7 1515-Lisbon, September 20 1540), 4th Duke of Guimarães and Prince of Portugal, was son of King Manuel I of Portugal and his wife Maria of Aragon.
He married in 1537 to Isabel of Braganza, daughter of James, 4th Duke of Braganza. Of his marriage he had three children:
- Maria of Guimarães (1538-1577), married Alexander Farnese, Duke of Parma.
- Catherine of Guimarães (1540-1614), Duchess of Braganza, married to John, 6th Duke of Braganza, she was a claimant of the throne of Portugal in 1580 (See: Struggle for the throne of Portugal).
- Edward, 5th Duke of Guimarães (1541-1576)
He is buried in the Monastery of Jerónimos in Lisbon.
