Florida is a municipality of Puerto Rico. Founded in 1971, it was the last Municipality founded in Puerto Rico. Florida is known as "La Tierra del Rio Encantado" (The Land of the Enchanted River).
Originally known as "Florida Afuera" and belonging to Manatí (another Municipality); this town derives its present name from the abundant flowers and natural resources.
Florida is located north of Utuado and Ciales; south of Barceloneta; east of Arecibo; and west of Manatí.
There are many well-known "florideños", among them: Francisco Frías; Luis "Tuto" Rivera (renown local historian, newspaper reporter, and photographer); Celia Arenas (poet and author of Florida's Municipal Hymn), Juan Font-Torres (renowned lawyer with the Justice Department of Puerto Rico).
