Fucose
From Freepedia
Image:Fucose.png Fucose is a hexose sugar with the chemical formula C6H12O5. It is found on N-linked glycans on the mammalian and plant cell surface. Alpha1→3 linked core fucose is a suspected carbohydrate antigen for IgE-mediated allergy. Sometimes fucose (FUC) and oligomannose (MAN) and galactose (GAL) can occur in a MAN-FUC-GAL polymer. Its structural formula can be derived from the cyclic form of glucose by replacing the carbon 6 hydroxyl (–OH) group with a hydrogen atom and switching the hydrogen atom and the hydroxyl group on Carbon 4. Alternatively the C3 hydroxyl of galactose can be moved to the C2 axial position thus allowing an equatorial reciprocity between C2 and C6 containing the original ketone substitution for the final C5 epimer rotation.
