Geneva is a town located in Ontario County, New York, USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,289. In 1806 the size of the town was reduced when the city of Geneva was incorporated from within a part of it.

The Town of Geneva is in the southeastern part of the county and borders the City of Geneva.

History

Settlement began around 1878. The town was established from part of the Town of Seneca in 1872.

Geography

The south town line is the border of Yates County, New York and the east town line is the border of Seneca County, New York. Part of the town is on the northwest shore of Seneca Lake.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 49.5 km² (19.1 mi²). 49.5 km² (19.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.0 km² (0.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.05% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 3,289 people, 1,416 households, and 900 families residing in the town. The population density is 66.5/km² (172.2/mi²). There are 1,532 housing units at an average density of 31.0 persons/km² (80.2 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.65% White, 2.43% African American, 0.06% Native American, 1.73% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.52% from other races, and 1.58% from two or more races. 1.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,416 households out of which 24.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% are married couples living together, 6.6% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 36.4% are non-families. 31.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the town the population is spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 28.9% from 45 to 64, and 20.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $44,234, and the median income for a family is $58,350. Males have a median income of $39,186 versus $23,108 for females. The per capita income for the town is $22,990. 3.4% of the population and 1.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 3.6% are under the age of 18 and 0.0% are 65 or older.
