Genrō

The Genrō (元老) were retired elder Japanese statesmen, who served as informal advisors to the emperor, during the Meiji and Taisho periods in Japanese history. They are also known to historians as the oligarchs of the Meiji Restoration. A few of the most famous were Itō Hirobumi and Yamagata Aritomo.
