Hepatitis G

Hepatitis G is a hepatitis - liver inflammation - caused by the hepatitis G virus (acronym HGV or GB virus). The virus was discovered in 1996. Little is known about the nature of the virus, indeed, whether there is only a single "species" of virus involved, and the diagnosis is complicated and expensive (attempts to develop an easier and cheaper test are underway, but hampered by general lack of knowledge about HGV). The acute disease seems to be a mild one. There is no available treatment. It results in chronic infection, which quite possibly is inevitably fatal (save for maybe a successful liver transplant). Most patients (99.7%) are also infected with hepatitis B and/or hepatitis C virus, while the occurrence of HGV infection is around 20% of all cases of chronic hepatits.
