Ivan Asen III of Bulgaria

Ivan Asen III, tsar of Bulgaria, was the son of Tsar Mico Asen (either a Bulgarian boyar or a Rurikid princeling from Russia) and his wife Princess Maria of Bulgaria, daughter of Ivan Asen II. Ivan Asen III married the Byzantine princess Irene, daughter of the Emperor Michael VIII Palaeologus. His son Andronikos Asen was never tsar, but through his daughter Irene and her husband, Emperor Ioannes VI Kantakuzenos, he was an ancestor of all subsequent Palaiologid monarchs of the Byzantine Empire.
