Kaffa Province, Ethiopia

Kaffa was a province on the southwestern side of Ethiopia; its capital city was Jimma. This province was created in 1942, following the liberation of Ethiopia from Italian occupation, by combining the following provinces created from conquered states into one administrative subdivision: the kingdoms of the Gibe region, Janjero, Kaffa, Goldiya, Shewa Gimira, Benesso, Guraferda, and Maji. As a result the Kingdom of Kaffa, which was conquered by Menelik II of Ethiopia in 1897, contributed the name to the new province, while the Kingdom of Jimma, an old rival to Kaffa, contributed the capital city.
With the adoption of the constitution in 1995, Kaffa became part of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region.
The name is widely known because coffee is suspected to have originated in this province.
