Karate R. Thiagarajan

From Freepedia

R. Thiagarajan, a resident of Adyar (Chennai) and popularly known as ‘Karate’ R. Thiagarajan, belongs to All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party.

As of 2005, he is the Mayor in-charge of Corporation of Chennai. M.K. Stalin, who was reelected as the Mayor of Chennai in 2001[1], was removed from the position on June 21, 2002[2]. This removal was made under a law enacted by the ruling AIADMK that bars the same person from holding two public positions simultaneously. This law was applied retroactively to Stalin's case (he was both an elected Member of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and the Mayor of Chennai at that time). This is typical of politics in Tamil Nadu, where the two leading parties bicker endlessly on all issues - trivial to significant. The abovementioned law was eventually declared "unconstitutionall and void" by the Madras High Court[3]. The court however disqualified Stalin under another clause in the Municipal Corporation Act, which forbids two consecutive terms for a Mayor or a Deputy Mayor.

Thiagarajan is also associated with activities relating to Karate.
