Kópavogur is the second-largest city in Iceland with a population of about 25,000. It lies south of Reykjavík and is a part of the greater Reykjavík area.

Kópavogur will be long remembered as the site of the 1662 Kópavogur meeting where bishop Brynjólfur Sveinsson and lögmaður Árni Oddsson on behalf of the Icelandic people signed a document confirming total monarchy for the king of Denmark over Iceland.
