Kungälv Municipality is a Municipality in Bohuslän in western Sweden; administrative it belongs to Västra Götaland County. Its seat is in Kungälv (pop. 20,500).
The city was founded in 1612, when the former settlement at Kungahälla was moved to the Bohus Fortress.
Geographically it borders to the municipalities of Gothenburg (Göteborg; south), Ale Municipality (east), Lilla Edet Municipality (north-east) and Stenungsund Municipality (north). To the south, marking to border to Gothenburg, flows the river Göta älv. On the other side of the river, the Bohus Fortress (one of Sweden's finest fortresses) faces the town Kungälv.
