List of nuclear accidents

This article covers notable accidents involving nuclear material. In some cases, these incidents involve people being injured or killed due to the release of radioactive contamination. Most incidents involve accidental releases that have caused contamination, but had no other immediate effects. Due to government and business secrecy, it is difficult to determine with certainty the extent of some events listed below.
An accidental detonation of a nuclear weapon has never happened. For an implosion assembly weapon this risk is lower, because it would require the precisely synchronized simultaneous detonation of its numerous explosive lenses. For a gun-assembly weapon the risk is higher.
