Mahanoy City Pronounced MOCK-anoy City, or MA-noy City, is a borough located 50 miles (80 km) north by west of Reading in northern Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania or the southern Coal Region. The name "Mahanoy" is believed to be a variation of the Native American word 'Maghonioy', or the ... salt deposits.

Mahanoy City, originally a part of Mahanoy township was settled in 1859 and incorporated as a borough in 1863. The borough was a major center of anthracite coal production and the region was embroiled in the Molly Maguire incidents. It is served by branches of the Lehigh Valley and the Philadelphia & Reading railways. The borough is situated in the valley of Mahanoy Creek, and has an elevation of 1240 ft. above the sea; Broad Mountain (1795 ft.), a ridge extending through Schuylkill county, overlooks it on the S.E. The valley is also part of the anthracite Coal Region of Pennsylvania, fire clay abounds in the vicinity, and the borough's principle industries are the mining and shipping of coal, and the manufacture of shirts and foundry products.

In 1948, Mahanoy City became one of the first municipalities in the country to have Cable TV.

The population in 1900 was 13,504 people; in 1910, 15,936 people; and in 1920, 15,599 people. The number of people working as coal miners had declined by 1940 when 13,442 people lived in the borough. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 4,647.

Geography

Mahanoy City is located at 40°48'45" North, 76°8'25" West (40.812413, -76.140223)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²). 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,647 people, 2,113 households, and 1,210 families residing in the borough. The population density is 3,518.1/km² (9,060.8/mi²). There are 2,595 housing units at an average density of 1,964.6/km² (5,059.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 98.79% White, 0.22% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. 1.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,113 households out of which 22.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.2% are married couples living together, 13.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.7% are non-families. 39.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 24.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the borough the population is spread out with 21.3% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 26.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 89.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.6 males.

The median income for a household in the borough is $24,347, and the median income for a family is $32,033. Males have a median income of $29,628 versus $20,288 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $14,369. 17.4% of the population and 12.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.3% of those under the age of 18 and 20.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
